It has been a couple of years since I first created the Wave Desk (2010). The original was three sided with a flat backside that sat against the wall. In late 2012 I was commissioned to build a second desk that was carved on all four sides and proudly sits out in the middle of the room, visible from every angle.
I feel the composition I created captures the randomness of waves on the ocean. To achieve this I create all of the shapes spontaneously on the shop floor starting at the bottom and working my way up. There are no prior drawings and there are no patterns made for the future. This ensures that every Wave desk or cabinetry creation made by my hands will be unique. A personal expression composed in the moment. All work is signed, dated, and numbered for provenance.
This technique can be adapted to other pieces of cabinetry such as dressers, sideboards, or nightstands.
